Using Five Senses and Multiple Intelligences to learn letter shapes and associate with sounds.

Children immersed in Jazzles Voconics appreciate that all the activities they enjoy are directed at building their knowledge and skills related to words, letter-sounds and text. One experience they particularly love is Alliterative Collage using the CRAFT pages in the Jazzles Blackline range of printables.

While the concept of collage is well known, Jazzles Voconics adds an extra dimension that turns this tactile experience into another literacy learning tool.

Called 'Alliterative Collage', the technique applies prolifi cally rich alliterative oral experiences combined with a range of multisensory activities, often with ideas to include the senses of smell, touch and, where possible, taste.

For example - 'C' and Senses of Touch and Smell
• Cover the 'c' on the craft page with thick glue.
• Crumble coffee, or use coffee beans, and carefully cover the 'c'.
• Using adjectives beginning with 'c', name it as: "Captivating, coffee 'c'!"
Alphabet Collage

The combination reinforces the knowledge of letter shapes while simultaneously developing associations between the letter shape and the lettersound being learned singing the Jazzles song.

While children collage, talk to them using as many alliterative words as possible starting with the focus letter. For example, with 'm', link the activity to the Jazzles 'My Melon' song lyrics. Add multiple dimensions by painting the 'M' in watermelon pink, gluing melon seeds all over it and then discussing it using as many alliterative words as you can. "What a marvellous mouth-watering magnificent melon!" to reinforce the sound-letter link. Even better if children eat some melon!

Rainbow Writing

Print off a copy for each child to use either as an individual or group activity. If you have access to an IWB, project on to the board and demonstrate letter formation. Children can also individually practice 'Rainbow Writing' the letter inside the outline on the electronic whiteboard.

Jazzles Multisensory Collage Uses Senses of Touch, Sight and Hearing!

Use it for Learning Letter Shapes and Sounds.

Alphabet Collage Letter 'e' using crushed eggshells!

Jazzles Multisensory CRAFT Pages like these come in digital format for projection and printing off a copy for each child to use either as an individual or group activity. If you have access to an Interactive White Board, project the digital image on to the board and demonstrate letter formation. Children can also individually practice 'Rainbow Writing' the letter inside the outline on the electronic whiteboard!

Use Jazzles CRAFT Pages to:

• Learn the letter shape using the senses of Touch, Sight, Smell, Hearing and in some cases, Taste.
• Consolidate sound-letter correspondence.

Alphabet Collage

• Develop and extend Vocabulary, especially the use of adjectives.
• Develop the skill of Alliteration.
• Develop Phonemic Awareness Skills in Initial Sound Fluency and Phoneme Identification.
• Develop Non Cognitive Skills in socialization, negotiation, communication, cooperation, sharing and staying on task etc.
• Practice letter formation (Rainbow Writing)
• Develop fi ne motor skills by cutting, pasting, manipulating collage materials, coloring and painting.
• Engage the sense of smell (where appropriate) for letter-sound recall. You can, add perfume, herbs or fragrant oils to the finished letter. For example, with 'c', use instant coffee; use lavender oil for 'l' and tea tree oil or tarragon for 't' and peppermint of course for 'p'!

In the images above, the letter 'e' is collaged with crushed eggshells. The letter 'p' with popcorn and the letter 'c' on the left with instant coffee!

Research shows that linking letters with sounds is the single most important step in early reading readiness.

Case Study:
A child was having difficulty recalling the initial sound 'c' in a word. Having previously collaged the Jazzles CRAFT page for the letter 'c' with instant coffee, she was able thereafter to recall the sound by remembering her experience of smelling the coffee!

How To Have Fun Collaging:

"While children collage, I like to talk to them using as many words as possible starting with the collage letter we are working on. For example, with the letter 'M', I link the activity to the Jazzles 'Voconics' 'My Melon' song and its lyrics. I add multiple dimensions by painting the 'M' in watermelon pink, gluing melon seeds all over it and then discussing it with the children using as many alliterative words as I can. For example, "What a marvellous mouth-watering magnificent melon!" to reinforce the sound-letter link.

I ask children for their own ideas too, so you get helpful hints such as dribbling dirt inside the 'D' letter outline! Just the sort of thing children love to do!

Children love being creative. They love music too. This makes the activity even more enjoyable when they sing along as they collage, strongly reinforcing the sound/letter relationship!
When you start to collage, select the track of the same letter on the Jazzles Voconics 'Alliterative Alphabet Songs' CD and have fun! Don't forget to ask your children for their own ideas too!"
