Jazzles 'Create A Dictionary' Book!

Collect and Record Words Alphabetically.

Jazzles Create A
Dictionary

It is important for children learning to read, write and spell that they create their own personal collection of most loved and commonly used words.

This personal dictionary book enables children to collect, order and record initial words alphabetically.

Arranging words into their own dictionary creates a valuable resource children can use - while developing a variety of other dictionary skills essential to their future learning.

Each letter of the alphabet has its own page plus there are 8 pages for gathering 'theme related' words.

Although this book stands on its own, it is best used in association with the Jazzles 'Alphabet Clever Songs' CD and its song lyrics.

Creating the Dictionary.

This book is ideally used as a progress record and in conjunction with the Jazzles 'Alphabet Clever Songs' CD. This CD includes a song that teaches the order of the alphabet as well as providing a base group of words from each alphabet song.

The best way to organize this activity is as follows:

Collect words starting
'G'

  • Having learnt the song, list the words of the focus letter song on a chalkboard, colorful paper spreadsheet or overhead projector.
  • Ask your children to help arrange the words in alphabetical order. For strict alphabetical order, you will need to explain how to arrange the words by the second and third letter (etc.).
  • Now they can record the words on the appropriate dictionary page.
  • An added creative activity is for children to decorate the border of each page with a pattern of upper and lower case target letters. For example - Aa-Aa-Aa - an excellent way to practice upper and lower case letters.
  • Children then add words when ever they wish and use their dictionary to access words they need for their writing.

Children love the Jazzles songs and you will find this a fun way to focus on a letter.

Using the Theme Pages.

Use these pages to group and record words that children frequently use and/or are 'theme related:-
