What Reviewers Are Saying About Jazzles ...

American Library Association Booklist Magazine

"The 30 entertaining songs on this recording will tickle preschoolers beginning to attain familiarity with alphabet letters. Happily, the songs (such as "Angry Alligator," "B1ue Bus Blues," and "Clever Kid") rarely settle for common alphabetical clich豮
Musically, the selections are outstanding, with skilful performances by the Jazzles, as the young singers are known. The original tunes are creatively "jazzy"

Children's BookWatch Magazine

"The Jazzles Alphabet songs are as educational as they are entertaining, assisting memory and recall of sound-letter relationshipsof the alphabet by combining alliteration and rhyme in a wide variety of upbeat, contemporary styles of music for kids of all ages. Highly recommended for preschool, kindergarten, day-care center, and home-schooling curriculums." September 2000

A book publisher. November 2000

"I must tell you how impressed I am with your product. The biggest thing that struck me is that ALL of the words to your songs are REAL! So many of the alphabet books and other learn-to-read packages are full of made-up words which, although funny and amusing, don't really give the child practical experience with reading something that really makes sense. I definitely feel that something new and different like Jazzles is a breath of fresh air, and will be welcomed by parents and educators alike. "

Indiana University Web Site Course Topics Link

"Jazzles are songs with upbeat music and simple, not simplistic, lyrics that are to help elementary, especially ESL, students learn the alphabet. Students love music and when they can learn along with it, all the better."

Island Family Magazine Hawaii September 2000

" Jazzles Alphabet Clever Songs use rhythm, rhyme, alliteration and a variety of musical styles to help young children recall sound-letter relationships. Using lyrics designed especially for young children, these 26 songs are an exciting way for young children to learn, pronounce and recall the use of every letter in the alphabet."

In this video, N. Dakota teacher Diane Pedersen, explains her experiences with Jazzles and its strong emotional engagement that combines play-based, music themed learning with early reading strategies.

Tried and tested, university-supervised theses support the experiences of thousands of teachers that Jazzles delivers all 6 essentials of literacy - Vocabulary, Phonemic Awareness, Alphabetic Principal, Comprehension, Concepts of Print and Fluency with data showing kindergarten students achieving year end literacy standards within the first semester.

I have had experience with the new Open Court program with K-5. The music I use and the kids just adore them for Kinder and 1st grade are:
" JAZZLES" which works on the letters of the alphabet and I think is a "must have " for any teacher of kinder and 1st grade. Each letter has a fantastic song to go with it . The teachers will really thank you if you use this CD. You can download from the CD the words. The JAZZLES songs are great for performances too. The Open Court songs are "boring". There is no other word for them.

Lesley, you are sweet. My classroom loved the Jazzles CD. After about a week, they could sing a lot of the songs. They would giggle also. Jazzles really helps at group time when we come up with words for different letters. One of my little girls sang one of the letter songs from your cd. It was pretty cute. I teach 4 year olds.. Thanks again.

Imagine using the power of upbeat music and song to help children become early reader achievers. Jazzles uses this power with 48 minutes of amusing phonics knowledge songs that children seem to sing like "crazy" – achieving amazingly fast understanding of alphabet sound-letter relationships – one of the single most important steps in reading readiness!

"In an age with great leaps in lifestyle, it shocking that children of primary school age in countries like USA, Australia, and Britain, have some of the worst reading and language skills in memory.

In the USA, nearly one in five children encounter reading problems in the crucial first three years of their schooling, making it very difficult to catch up later.

Invariably, it is difficulty linking letters with sounds that is the source of the problem.

That's why I created Jazzles – a series of mostly amusing, rhyming and heavily alliterative alphabet songs that help children learn how different English language letters sound e.g. C as in Cat, catch, can etc. Children love it as do parents and teachers."

Dear Lesley,

Well at least you got my email! I used jazzles with my Year 1 class last year (5-6 year olds) and they absolutely loved it. I had 3 children with Down Syndrome and they loved to sing and point to the words, and always asked for them over and over again. This year I am using them again and many of the teachers in the school have asked me where I got it from,so it would probably be a good idea for Scholastic to run it again.

Thanks Again

I have just received my Jazzles CD It was more than I expected. The music is not geared for just 5 years old. I can use it with my older children as well. It is very hard to find emergent literacy that is not too young. I have written to (name deleted) because she is doing a lot of research in singing and reading. I think this something to show at the big conference in October.

Thank you all for such a wonderful piece of work. My warmest regards to you and all ye beautifully-voiced folks. I will also recommend it to other teacher friends.

Lesley,
I'm grooving to your CD as I type this....In a word....Bravo! Very well done, great production..I can see why you have sold so many! We have a favorite already...The Q Song...Quack quack quack...so simple, yet so catchy and effective...very well done........

Jazzles could be called
"English Language Learning Jingles"
Jazzles is consistent in its usage of – prolifically alliterative, rhyming songs with catchy upbeat music. And believe me, these Jazzles "Jingles" are as effective for easy recall of the lyrics and their 400 words in context as any popular TV advertisement!

"By personally creating and marketing Jazzles, I have discovered something not widely appreciated. By using low-anxiety based resources like our Jazzles products, (i.e. the opposite of pressure learning),  you can help a wide age bracket of children and adults acquire English Language skills, notably essential reading skill and pronunciation. This bracket includes ESL and students with learning difficulties arising from physical and\or intellectual disabilities. And, because Jazzles is low-anxiety, it appeals to parents and teachers world-wide. Jazzles is I believe unique in its appeal to these various sectors."

Jazzles books and CDs have distributed by Scholastic in the Asia Pacific Region.

Tens of thousands of teachers and parents world-wide now use Jazzles resources! Listen to what they say.

I was very intrigued with your product! I teach kindergarten and have many children in my classroom that are ESL students. I truly believe the music helps them "hear" the sounds that the letters make and helps them learn the language faster...not to mention that they love music! I teach a letter a week to ensure that I eventually cover all the letters. Many of the letters are also used as a thematic unit...example, letter Pp is for pumpkins. I teach this letter and its sound during a week in October. Thanks for the "new" material...I like to use products that keep me fresh!

Re ESL – over 1 in 3 ESL students per class!

US. Dept Education figures show that thirty-six percent of the total student population in the U.S. public elementary and secondary schools come from linguistically and culturally diverse backgrounds – a percentage that continues to increase. Some schools have as many as 40 different language backgrounds! This multi-cultural profile is true in most Western Countries. This places a big strain on the schooling system – and a big need for resources that can be used simultaneously for both English Speaking and ESL students in mainstream classes.

Jazzles ALSO works for ESL – up to and including young adults – because all the language is contemporary – not babyish!

Plus... children's resources usually have clear class presentations, and creative development of related lesson and unit plans. "Dear Lesley,
You can't imagine how fast children can learn when it is in a "funny" way. Although some Jazzles songs have some quite difficult words for them, they are able to sing them with a perfect accent!!!
My wife first uses the painting sheets to teach them the meaning of the words and the meaning of the "story" of each song. This is usually in Spanish.

When children have been working with the material for a whole week, they are totally ready to listen to the music and get the meaning of it all!!!!.

Hello, dear Lesley,
Your concept of "worksheets/music" is great because music is the frame for my multicultural students. I've got a project in a High School with emigrant students (e.g. Russia, former Yugoslavia). We are studying the process of language acquisition in second language (German) and foreign language (English). The students are 6th, 8th, 7th and 10th Graders on level C.

That means their skills are poor and therefore our problem is to make them more interested in learning English. The didactic medias they are used to work with are as poor as their interest....
Again – thank you for your support!"

Hi, Lesley,
Here are some experiences with the Jazzles lyric songs CD combined with the worksheets:

I did it with 6th and 10th graders learning English since 2 and 5 years in a German High school – you remember? We framed the
(i.e. Jazzles) song "Rowing Boat" with "Free time activities/Hobbies" and the "Melon" song with "What a picnic!"

During the English lessons I considered a high motivation. The positive result was, all students were able to sing these songs and to write them down by heart. They learned syntactical modifications, e.g. transforming the song texts in another personal form or using another grammatical tense.

Step by step I will link all your Lyrics with themes in any English textbooks. For learning the words (vocabulary) your picture worksheets are very supportive.

Best regards

Children with learning disabilities love Jazzles visual and aural aids...says this letter from an independent Occupational Therapist!

18th December 2001

Dear Lesley

I am Occupational Therapist working with children with intellectual and physical disabilities in mainstream and special schools. I am writing to let you know how useful I have found the Jazzles Alphabet Songs and Coloring Book CD-CDROM.

Recently I completed a Fine Motor Skills group with an IO class in a mainstream school, in which I used your CD and Coloring Books as a basis.

Each week a song was chosen – usually involving an animal. From this song we developed an action song. This was great for warming up our little people's fingers. From the coloring book, we developed craft activities that each week targeted a particular fine motor action.

The response from the children was fantastic. Each week they got involved in the activities and the music and started to develop and build upon their existing skills. In addition it was seen to be extremely calming with the children.

On several occasion we used it as a background and motivator with great success. The teacher who we were working with was keen to gain copies and use it with this group of children due to the response.

Congratulations on developing such a useful, valuable and fun package. I will be using this again with other groups of children.
