Using Five Senses and Multiple Intelligences to learn letter shapes and associate with sounds. In this example, the letter b is collaged with black beans, the i with stick on insects and the letter g with gold glitter!
Called 'Multisensory Collage', and developed by Lesley Beth for Jazzles Voconics to cater for all learning styles and 8 multiple intelligences, the technique applies prolifically rich alliterative oral experiences combined
with a range of multisensory activities, often with ideas to include the senses of smell, touch and, where possible, taste.
The combination reinforces the knowledge of letter shapes while simultaneously developing associations
between the letter shape and the letter-sound being learned singing along to the Jazzles songs and musical animations.
A child was having difficulty recalling the initial
sound 'c' in a word. Using coffee to collage the letter 'c', joining in all the ongoing discussion about collage and crumbling the coffee on to the letter shape, using multiple adjectives beginning with 'c' to name her artwork as captivating, coffee 'c', she was able thereafter to recall the sound by remembering her experience of smelling the coffee!
